Annabelle could not read before Primary 1. Her mother enrolled her in night phonics classes just to keep up. She was last in Chinese while both her sisters took Higher Chinese.
In primary school, only the top students got picked for leadership, school teams, overseas trips. Annabelle was not in that group. Not for most of it.

It started in Primary 5 when a young teacher joined her class and did something no one had done before. She told the students to choose their own seats - Annabel sat right infront of the teacher’s table.

That teacher stayed back everyday with her and even put her on the cheerleading team. When the P5 camp high element was terrifying, she said: just take three steps, you don’t have to go all the way. Eventually, they came in first for cheerleading.
