She was last in Chinese. She fell asleep in class. She got written off.

Annabelle could not read before Primary 1. Her mother enrolled her in night phonics classes just to keep up. She was last in Chinese while both her sisters took Higher Chinese.

In primary school, only the top students got picked for leadership, school teams, overseas trips. Annabelle was not in that group. Not for most of it.

In Primary 5, a young teacher joined her class and did something no one had done before. She told the children to choose their own seats. Annabelle sat right in front of the teacher's table.

That teacher stayed back every day with her. Put her on the cheerleading team. When the camp high element was terrifying, she said: just take three steps. You don't have to go all the way. They came first in cheerleading.

In secondary school, at a neighbourhood school everyone called the Ah Beng school, Annabelle became head of discipline. Her Chinese teacher refused to accept her O-Level result. Made her re-sit. She went from C5 to B3.
